Lucrative hotspot
I’m participating in an emergent community free wireless group in Gatineau Ottawa (Ottawa Gatineau Wifi) and while looking for something else, I came across a hotspot locator for paid service.
Bell, Telus, Fido and Rogers has started offering in different cities in Canada wireless service which they called “hotspot”. You pay a certain monthly fee so that when you visit those “hotspot” you can surf the Net with your laptop or PDA.
If I didn’t have a high speed connection at home and would go more often in cafe, restaurant, shopping mall, etc, I would definitely consider this option as opposed to paying for a home service. The prices vary. Bell: $25/month, Telus: $40/month and Fido: $40. Unfortunately, Rogers’s web site was down at time I’m writting this blog. They surely offer different options, but I didn’t look that deep into it.
Being involve in OG Wifi, I’m putting more effort in trying to create a community with free high speed wireless. That would be much greater!
Will keep in posted with our progress.

25$/month is not too bad, but if you are already paying 40$ for high-speed internet at home, this is a bit too much to stay connected when you are on the road. I wonder if service providers like Bell will eventually offer a special deals if you already have high-speed with them, just like they let you connect with dial-up if you have a high-speed connection. It might even be a good teaser to get the customer hooked. Give them 10 hours of wireless connectivity per month with a high-speed plan and see… I wonder if that would fly?
